When is splitting pairs in blackjack a good idea?

Blackjack can certainly prevent opportunities that benefit the player over the dealer, but definitely none more so then when the player has the chance to split a pair. Splitting pair gives the player the chance to essentially double their original bet. By receiving two cards of the same value, the player has the chance of opting to split them, and doubling the size of their original bet. But when is the best time to split pairs?
Obviously, doubling down with a pair of twos or threes is not exactly your best option. However, doubling down with a pair of tens or a pair of aces can reap some nice rewards. Much can also depend on the dealer’s up card. If the dealer has dealt an up card of a nine, ten, or ace, it may not necessarily be the best time to split your pair, no matter what cards you are holding.
However, if a dealer deals himself an up card between two and six, the odds are better than average that they will bust their hand. If you’ve been dealt favorable matching cards at this point, the player has the clear advantage. Splitting pairs can certainly be profitable, but it’s also important to understand mathematical probabilities when deciding to split.
