When Federated Sports and Gaming came up with the idea of the Epic Poker League in early 2011, they lined up some of the biggest names in poker to promote their new idea. Former World Series of Poker commissioner Jeffrey Pollack was tabbed as the executive director of the Epic Poker League, and Annie Duke, arguably the most famous professional female poker player of all time, was tabbed as it first commissioner. In addition, Matt Savage, who has officiated as a tournament for the World Series of Poker and many other events, will serve as the Tournament Director.
Epic Poker League has already started play, with one tournament each in the months of August and September. The qualifications for the Epic Poker League is much more stringent than that of other tournaments, with each player qualifying based on prior significant winnings on various tours. CBS and Velocity Networks will start airing Epic Poker League programming, beginning on the weekend of Oct. 7, 2011. Within the first year, 20 hours of programming will be featured between the two networks, and two more tournaments are scheduled within the next four months, with the final tournament to determine the Epic Poker League’s first overall champion in February 2012. The league is hoping that its format will be a draw for professional poker players, and for its many fans across the country.
